Using Sandblasting Equipment in Aerospace Manufacturing and Maintenance

Whether your company wants to apply a fresh coat of paint to an aircraft or remove rust from parts and components, sandblasting is the most efficient and cost-effective way to return your aerospace materials and equipment to a “blank slate.”

Sandblasting plays an essential role in aerospace equipment manufacturing, maintenance, and upkeep, and is primarily used in the following applications:

  • Cleaning individual components to remove grease, grime, and rust;
  • Restoring and cleaning landing gear;
  • Removing mold, grime, and other contaminants;
  • Removing coatings, including urethane and epoxy;
  • Stripping away old paint and rust from the body of an aircraft;
  • Preparing new materials, including removing burrs and adding texture.

Common Sandblasting Media Used in Aerospace Maintenance

While sand is no longer used in blasting due to the dangers of silica dust, we carry these highly effective abrasive media:

  • Crushed glass
  • Coal slag
  • Baking soda
  • Garnet
  • Corncob
  • Zinc cut wire
  • Stainless steel cut wire
  • Aluminum oxide

In general, the more sturdy, steel, teflon, and other materials hold up to more aggressive media, including garnet and aluminum oxide, while baking soda is used for more delicate substrates.

Vibratory Machines

For deburring and and burnishing components and parts quickly and effectively, we also carry a wide selection of automated vibratory finishers, screeners, dryers, and combination units. In addition to the machinery, we have corn cob, walnut shell, and other types of media as well as vibratory wash and finishing compounds.

Sandblasting Safety Equipment for Aerospace Workers

Keep your crew safe and protected, as well as ensuring OSHA compliance, with our full range of Respiratory Protection Blasting safety gear, protective clothing, and PPE. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • RPB Blast Suits in a range of sizes;
  • Full respirators to cover your head, neck, and shoulders;
