A customer reached out to Rodeco Blast Services reporting an issue with their blast respirator’s climate control device, which had stopped functioning effectively. Initially, they believed the device needed to be replaced. Upon arriving, we conducted a thorough assessment and inquired whether any changes had been made to their blasting setup. The customer confirmed that there had been no adjustments to the compressor, pressure settings, abrasive, or PPE, leading us to suspect that the issue was not with the climate control device itself.
We asked about the specific equipment in use and learned that the customer was operating with a 185 CFM compressor and a #5 long venturi nozzle, which had been in service for an extended period. Upon inspecting the nozzle, our technician identified significant wear—what started as a 5/16” orifice had worn to over 3/8”. This wear had increased the air demand for blasting, reducing the airflow available for proper respirator cooling. After replacing the nozzle, airflow was restored to optimal levels, resolving the climate control issue and improving overall blasting performance. The customer was able to resume full production with minimal downtime and a quick, effective solution.
